Can anyone ID this Squire?
Howdy,
Got one I'm having trouble putting a year and version too. Hopefully someone here can ID it.
Specs:
- Standard 3 coil (haven't opened it up yet to see under the hood)
- Natural finish, gloss, not sure of wood but it's three pieces and HEAVY.
- Fast C neck, much like my korean serial number Squier. Rosewood.
- White pick guard and back cover plate.
- Non-branded but nicer tuners
- All hardware chrome (not gold like a Protone)
- Serial number was at base of neck but some one removed.
- Headstock says "Squier Strat" (big) by "Fender" (small below), black ink only, smaller head size
- Nice bridge, cast I believe
- No numbers or other markings.
I haven't taken the neck off to see the year yet, but was hoping someone out there might find it familiar.
I'll post photos as soon as I get used to this interface (newby to this forum).
Big thanks in advance.
Buck

Is the headstock huge or small?

That's a beaut!
I don't think it's a Korean model, though. I could be mistaken, but most that I"ve seen have the pointed pick guard by the plug...this one doesn't have that.
Did you buy this new or secnod hand?

Do you have an example of this "pointed" pickguard? Other than the finish (mine was black), almost everything in this one matches mine, and I've been trying to sort out its origins as well. I guess my tuners do say "Squier" on them, and my body is four-piece.

Maybe it was just the Bullet's from '87 that had the pointed pickguards?

I think if more squiers has nice looking wood bodies like that we'd know what the heck it is. So I'm gonna say the body is an upgrade to the other parts.

Just checked... the tuners are Squire tuners (branded).
The body could be a replacement I suppose, but the finish is factory not home grown.
I just sold my Korean a week or so ago and it was a lot lighter and the finish on the neck was more of a satin on a lighter wood. It was a VN serial number. Ah, I miss her already. Especially the Betty Paige decal on her.
Liked the weight on this one more so I kept her.

btw, anyone want to hazard a guess on the wood type for the body. I stink at identifying wood types. All looks like maple to me.

Yeah, it has the SE style tuners.
THe SE was only produced in white, black and sunburst though.
Wondering if someone put a SE neck on a different fender body.
Confusing.

That does not look like a small headstock. Beautiful wood body. I would love to have one like that. This is the head from my deluxe.

I had a neck (just the neck) like that recently (just Squier STRAT and no truss rod plug); it was crafted in China. It, too, was heavier (and meatier) than some of my Korean Squier necks. Can't say anything about the body, except that it's pretty. How is the sustain?

That's what I'm thinking also, just maybe not a Fender body. It looks like someone put an SE neck and possibly loaded pickguard onto an aftermarket body. Several places like GFS, Warmouth, Mighty-Mite, etc., all sell nice clear finish ash or poplar bodies like that.
Here's GFS's, it isn't even terribly expensive at about $65:

SE serial numbers are normally on a sticker on the back of the headstock which is often removed. Also where the OP says the serial number was removed from the heel of the neck is usually where there is a sticker that says "Made in China" on SEs.

The sustains pretty good. Not as good as my Reverends, buy better than my Korean.

The heel looks worn like someone took a light abrasive to it. A little excessive for a sticker removal (smile).
Yeah, my old MIK strat had GF tex style pups on it. (again, missing it). Looks like I'm gonna have to take her apart to get all the answer -sigh. Ah well, I can at least check the pots and wiring while I'm in there. Curious what's in there since it sounds so smooth.
Thanks for all the help everyone!
Buck

Definitely an SE neck. Everything about that looks like my SE including the 3 ply pickguard. The only difference is the finish on the body. Mine is the common black. With serial numbers on stickers are we sure Fender/Squier never put out an SE with that finish on the body?

With Squier you can never say never, but I've never seen a natural finish SE. The ones I've seen have mostly all been black, white, red and sunburst are occasionally seen, but far less frequent than black. It is possible someone stripped and re-finished an SE body to natural. Most likely would be if someone started with a sunburst since those would be most likely to have decent wood grain. Probably it is more likely someone swapped an SE neck and possibly the loaded pickguard or parts onto a nice aftermarket body though... stripping a poly finished guitar like an SE is a lot of work as other threads on this forum can attest.
