Default Project 51-The Strat

Yes. It's exactly what it sounds like. A Squier '51/Strat hybrid; a Squier '51 in a Strat's clothing if you will.

The Story...
"I don't know how it started. I can't tell you what it meant to end there at the beginning that was the end but it began like this" narrated some film noir bloke...
A donated MIM Squier with a ruined finish was donated as an "I like your enthusiasm" gift by one of several Michaels I know. Michael Cameron who's known around London's West End as a repairman here: http://www.hobgoblin.com/london/index.php
He also donated an old Teisco neck that couldn't fit and an American spec. AllParts Fender licensed Strat Scratchplate.

I was GASing for a Squier '51. Didn't have the money but I helped my friend find a mint stock one for £150 which he cherishes. I decided to turn the Strat body into a Squier '51 style guitar electrically with some 50s LP, 5-way Tele and Esquire influences. I created a wiring diagram and gradually collected the parts. A name was forged... Strat '51.

The body was stripped bare. We thought it was Alder, but it was Alder veneer. We stripped the veneer. The body was 4-piece Maple! This was mysterious but it would explain the accounts of persons claiming the MIM Squiers bright in tone.

Just last week I met with a College student named AJ. AJ Smith. He sold me a 1991 Squier MIK One-piece Maple neck for £30. Bargain.

The body was sprayed using a naturally derived lacquer. Oh, suit you sir

I supplied myself with some old project parts lying around...

These past few days the final pieces were ordered. A bridge position IronGear O/W Rolling Mill and the last few bits of hardware. A bridge position IronGear Pig Iron was reused to become the neck pickup with a steep offset. The AllParts scratchplate was roughed up and primed. Burl Maple veneer was applied and pickup holes filled in. Just yesterday, the pickups were positioned and marked. Soon they will be drilled...
Enough silliness...

Here's the cut version. It's a Strat/Squier '51 hybrid with an Esquire/NOScaster in the DNA somewhere. Nicknamed "Lead Nellie" which you can ask about.
I'm sorry I neglected to photograph the entire process but I'll certainly try to get some pics in or this thread will be very lame. It's getting to the wiring stage and so far it's all cost about £80; I could probably do one of those £100 build challenges lol

Pics will arrive soon... [oh the humanity!!!]

Default Finally some pics!!!

Meet the Step family! It's my step dad's room with a Cittern, an Oud, a Buzuki, a Mandola, a Baroque Guitar, a Classical Guitar and a six-string Cittern. The big "cabinets" are called Butsudans, they're part of his Buddhist religion to put it shortly. There are even more Butsudans and guitars in the workshop.

There's still some work to be done but hopefully by next weekend we'll be wiring up. Then you can all find out about the mysterious wiring scheme

... just to get folks intrigued, the wiring in this thing will emulate an Esquire/NOScaster, Squier '51 and to an extent a 50s Les Paul and a Strat/Super Strat...

very slow progress
very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very slow progress
Probably no update for a week...

The scratchplate is undergoing it's final drilling etc. should have a final coat on soon... just have to wait for the bargain I found Copper Tape to restock and my brother to get back from Canada as he's better with the soldering iron than I.

More uninformative somewhat pointless updates in a far flung future populated by carrots soon...

I hope she does xD

I feel like I've got the lamest Build Thread here... should I post the wiring diagram or would that be spoiling the surprise... the epic reveal of the-finished-body-and-ppl-asking-"how it works?"-then-answering-with-the-very-unexpected appeals...

Or shall I just be all Yoda-philosophy and shuddup and post when I got stuff to post and do it with continuity...?

THE WIRING

Ok. I predict some folks are baffled.
The Orange on the "Wood" is meant to represent Copper Shielding on the body. Everything is shown as a relative representation, anything not touching the Copper casts a shadow or is a wire [the wires should be fairly easy to discern, I hope]. The diagram has a flow to it, notice how the order from left to right e.g HB, Switch, Rotary Controls then the Jack.
The details:
-HS Config. in the way shown.
-5-Way Tele Mod. on the HB for full Coil-Splitting control.
-6-Way Rotary Switch giving 1=Neck (Sapped Nocaster/Esquire/50s LP Inspired) 2=Neck (With Tone Control) 3=Neck (Raw) 4=Bridge & Neck (Parallel/Raw) 5=Bridge (With Tone Control) 6=Bridge (Raw). The idea being that it still resembles the operation of a normal Tone control; "nudging towards TREBLE bit by bit" or rolling back on the Treble Frequencies as the dial reaches towards "10".
-My SOZ Mod. of my own invention. SOZ stands for "Sap Or Zap" referring to a capacitor wired into a Stereo Jack with two variant schemes. The SOZ mod. gives two settings: Sap=Cap engaged and Zap=Cap Disengaged

I think I have a better shot at figuring out powerpoint than I would understand the wiring schematic ... though I'd rather the schematic.

The background is wood. It represents the guitar body or the routing itself.

The large Orange squares with varying shades is meant to look like shiny Copper. Copper Shielding of which everything is in direct contact with unless it is a wire or an object that casts a shadow. e.g the PUPs are not in direct contact with the shielding [so as to not be accidentally grounded out] and the Volume Pot's housing is grounded but the control tabs are not.

The Grey numbered rectangle is a 5-way blade switch. Strat Import Spec.

The strange blue thing comprising of triangles and squares, is a 6-way Double-pole rotary switch.

The odd pronged Orange, Red and Black thing is a stereo jack. Red represents the Primary Hot whilst the Orange is a secondary/auxiliary Hot which can be grounded out. The Black is the Ground component of the Jack. Each is a singular piece grouped/put together in reflection of the actual Jack in reality.

The floating Orange rectangles are Sprague "Orange Drop" Capacitors.
The floating Navy Blue diamond-like things are 3.3kOhm Resistors.
The floating Green thing is a Mylar Film Capacitor.

The Pickups should be fairly identifiable. They are from Axetec.co.uk who are the soul distributor of IronGear Pickups.

The Alpha symbols are meant to show they are linked. I strived to make the diagram look as simple as possible whilst seeming instructional when analyzed... however, it is more to my own logistics. I would've made a conventional schematic of some sort but I got carried away with this one. I liked it's half-way point being in between a Formal Electrical Schematic and a General Diagram.

I will make a schematic though as I'm enjoying the geekery... Hopefully, no one has just conjured the image of a greasy, plump kid with glasses, braces and terrible acne; coupled with a high waist band and dull gridded shirt with a Red and Black pen in the breast pocket.
Just pretend I'm Jimmy Page's illicit Anglo-Japanese Grandchild... but that'd just be weird and contradictory to the purposes of this alias "Bill Stickers"

INNOCENT.

HERE ARE THE SOURCES FOR THE WIRING...

The 5-Way Tele Mod:
http://www.tdpri.com/gifs/wiring-tele-5wayAndersen.jpg
Instead of the Bridge PUP Hot, it's the North coil [coil closest to the bridge] Hot wire.
Instead of the Neck PUP Hot, it's the South coil [coil with covered pole pieces] Hot wire.
Instead of the Bridge PUP Ground, it's the North coil Ground.
So it's like this:
http://www.irongear.co.uk/irongear%2...gwatermark.gif
Red wire in 5W Tele Mod>>>Red HB wire
Green wire in 5W Tele Mod>>>Green HB wire
Pink wire in 5W Tele Mod>>>White HB wire

The "Sap or Zap" Squier '51 Mod:

On revision, a while back, I realize there's no need to note the bent prong. I was working on it with a Stereo Jack I thought was a bit misshapen but it's not the case. In Type A you make sure that the longer Prong does not touch the Jack socket when the shorter Prong is in contact with the Hot part of the Guitar Lead Plug. As far as I'm aware, Type B is how a Stereo Jack works anyway. All in all, Type B is the more favourable...
Notice that the Type A mod runs through the Cap. when "disengaged".
Note:That's a standard Mono Guitar Lead, NOT a Stereo one.

The Esquire & Broadcaster/Nocaster:
http://www.seymourduncan.com/images/...cs/esquire.jpg
http://inlinethumb18.webshots.com/12...600x600Q85.jpg

The Squier '51:
http://www.squierguitars.com/pdf/dia...100-wiring.pdf

The 3-way Rotary Switch gradually mutated into a "Faux Tone Control" using a 6-way Rotary Switch. The 1st setting appearing as "0" on a tone control knob.
1=Neck [Esquire/Broadcaster/Nocaster-esque with Tone control. 9.9k Resistor value is shown but I might change this.]
2=Neck [With Tone Control]
3=Neck [No Tone Control; "Raw"]
4=Bridge & Neck [Raw]
5=Bridge [With Tone Control]
6=Bridge [Raw]

I'll take more pics this weekend. Hopefully I can get some well-detailed ones as well as a few "car-parts-on-the-garage-floor-like-in-some-MTV-programme-all-ready-for-putting-together-but-screw-it-we-want-to-see-all-the-pieces-laid-out-looking-shiny-and-cool" shots.
After that, it's just a waiting game with the scratchplate then wiring begins.

You may notice some holes in the cavities aside from the odd one by the bridge and the hole for the tremolo claw.
These holes are from screwing the pickups in place with the guitar strung up loosely. We placed the pickups on the bottom, lined them up correctly then fastened them in place with tiny little screws. After that, we made an imprint on paper using creases and pencils. This was then used as a template. Lining up the template with the pickups cut out, we drew the spaces onto the scratchplate and proceeded to drill.

All the bits apart from the 6-way rotary which I forgot [ditsy-witsy] and the PUPs... which I also forgot... but never mind they're pictured with the scratchplate.
Bridge PUP version is in the NECK:
http://www.irongear.co.uk/irongear_020.htm
Overwound PUP version is in the BRIDGE:

Feels like "Mission Accomplished"

Now we just have to wait for the scratchplate to get finished... which is taking painfullly long...

Hey, Folks!

I just got an internship at Hobgoblins Music! xD Every Thursday from 10AM til... urm... it seems I got so buzzed I didn't ask...
Anyways, should be learning cool stuff from one of the best luthiers/guitar repairmen in London!
I'm going to ask if it's OK to take photos of some cool stuff there, although only if anyone here is interested of course...

The shop is down the road from my Bro so that means afterwards, I should be able to work on the project this thread is featuring! We can keep y'all entertained and make progress xD HOORAY!!!

Post pictures Bill, it should be great to see what you've gotten yourself into. Anyway, enjoy the experience.

Well... Mike (the luthier/repair guy) had some scheduling errors so I worked yesterday from 10:30AM til 6:00PM. Cleaned and restrung a lady's acoustic. Cleaned and cut a new nut for a Violin, using an old Ebony fingerboard chunk as the blank. Lowered a bridge on a mandolin to adjust the action. It was fun and tiring as there wasn't a spare seat I had to stand all day!
Some cool sights... sadly no pictures as I haven't got a response as to wether they'd be cool about it.

The project is going well. The Scratchplate is still undergoing more coating. As the PUP mounting screw holes are a little too close to the PUP hole, we're going to need some different screws for the Neck PUP. So mostly we just need to cut down on screws that need countersunk holes. Once the finish is shiny and built up, wiring will begin, which should go along with some speed as everything is acquired. The inventory is fill and construction has a delay.

Soon, my followers... soon...
