Default Squier Cyclone

Anyone have one ? Any info to share ? Where made? Sound? Look like a poor mans Jag-Stang.

I played one at a local shop and play very well for a guitar in its price range but I didn't notice where it was manufactured.

They're very decent. Very simple. They have a proper Fender bridge. I think they have Fender PUPs. The headstock is nice. They were made in Indonesia for the most part. They have a Basswood body. I think they're 24.75" scale... I forgot honestly. People treat them as if they have the same appeal as a Squier '51, so they don't come in nice prices second hand. Which is silly because they're discontinued, demand is minimal and they're bloody elusive! Rare only means "pointless to pursue" when the market barely exists, it does not automatically mean "super special thus super expensive".

I came close to buying one once, but it fell through. I remember when I tested it that I thought it was pretty average sounding, but felt pretty good.

Sadly the guitar had been in storage for years, and the fretboard was like sandpaper.

My plan was to take out the stock pickups and replace them with the same ones as the Fender version (Tex-Mex in the neck, and an Atomic Humbucker at the bridge). Other than that I would have left it stock.

For the $$$ some of the Squier ones are going for you're better off spending the 100-150 bucks and getting the Fender I come to find . Market's just out of whack right now.

This is the truth. Definitely better off spending the extra and getting a 'real' Fender.

The only reason the Squiers are so expensive is because they are so rare.

Just got mine second handed yesterday (CY04). This metallic blue kicks ass ! Sound is OK, excellent playability. It came with 3 extra modded pickguard, an extra pair of japanese Jazzmaster pickups. 135€. It definitly worth it !

A little pic of the JM mod from the previous owner :

I like the looks of'em. Never seen one in person let alone play one. I'd buy it just for my collection if it was reasonably priced and played well.

It looks sort of Mustangy. There is one for sale just now on CL in the southern Ontario area that is that colour. It has a single strat looking pickup and a bridge humbucker. They want $275 for it. Is that a good price for those?

Yes, it looks sweet same mustang/duo-sonic/bronco/musicmaster look. The Cobalt Blue is amazingly beautiful! I'm so happy i finally found one. In Europe, it's kinda rare model. (oh yes, it's an IC04, not a CY04)

Some pics i just took :

I have some insane pickup modding idea for this one.

Aha, so this is the thread where I should post this:

http://www.squier-talk.com/forum/squ...r-cyclone.html

I've had it for a while now, and still love it.

Anyway, a copule of words for those who haven't seen it in person yet:
the neck is pretty much made in the same fashion as those on a squier standard strat:
satin finish, skunk stripe, decent die cast tuners,
42 mm wide nut, as well as roughly the same profile as standard, save for scale length of course.

Body seems to be alder, and it's way more durable than standard's agathis. How do i now? Well, I somehow manage to drop every new guitar I get at least three times as soon as I get it... This one still has no cracks, not even superficial... Heavier than strat, despite the size, too.

It has a swimming pool route, which is cool for pickup configuration mods, I guess.

Pots also seem to be different than those on a standard strat: from the way they act I'd say they're audio taper.

Toggle switch: well, there's really no difference in sound between neck and middle position. I hear they're all like that... And the cap kept falling off so i glued it on! I'll reconcider installing those jag-mustang swithces...

The pickups: can't say what kind are they, or if they're found on any other squiers... But they're definitely not fender pickups, as some people on the net suggest.
Neck pup has staggered polepieces and sounds brighter that the one one on my strat.

If i compare the bridge pickup to the alnico on my epiphone SG, the cyclone has more output and a better balance; perhaps a tad more clarity, but at the same time perhaps lacks a bit of character, that is, sounds a bit sterile.
Definitely not vintage sounding, but not bad at all. (except if you're 20 or younger and consider early 90s music 'vintage' ).
I think it's safe to assume these were made with heavy use of effect pedals in mind.

Great guitar for the money, overall I'd say it's better than a squier standard, and they were cheaper new.
Personally, the only thing I don't like is the original pickguard, makes it look like just another strat knockoff. (though I guess it's ok if you want a duosonic lookalike).
I'll probably slip in a single coil bridge pickup at one point too, but for now I like it as it is, and it very well may become my no.1, as soon as I swap that crappy, chewing gum - like poor excuse for a nut.

I don't agree, the mid position has a strat position 2 & 4 quacky feel. Wonderfull for clean sound, terrible for distorsion.

Modding idea started :

Don't let that scare you off. A little time with ScotchBrite pads and a little lemon oil will cure that. I had to do that with my SE and the fretboard is great now. It even polished the frets as a bonus!

Hmm, then I should probably check my wiring...
Though, maybe it works differently with other pickups?

It's still the stock pickups on mine. I admit the difference between the neck single coil and the split is not as noticeable as on a strat but i can definitly hear this lovely quacky sound. And it is confirmed with distorsion on : it sound definitely parallel.
