Learn to play Bass
I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on the various training materials that are available. I have been looking at the folowing series: - Hal Leonard Bass Method
- Hal Leonard Fast Track
- Hal Leonard Play Bass Today
- eMedia Bass Method Software
- MJS Series
I have been doing the Lessons/Exercises on http://www.studybass.com/ and am enjoying those, but considering something more structured.
If you have thoughts regarding this list, or would like to suggest other training material, I would greatly appreciate it.
Cheers,
Ken

What song are you learning to play now? Maybe I'll learn it with you.
I'm not the structured type, probably because I study everything pretty much all together - music theory, percussion, scales, harmony, composition - and it can also involve performance, making videos, singing while playing bass (not easy for me) weirdo styles such as slide bass, see there is a point where this stuff does not come out of a book.
I'm trying to learn some slap bass popping fingerings and exercises. Here is one:

Hey Grrrowler39 I see that you play brass, I like the saxophone in this video and the bass player is playing slide bass. Looks like there is only one string on that bass.
Morphine "Buena"
Morphine was formed in 1990 by bassist/vocalist Mark Sandman
Slide close ups about 2:04, 2:08, 2:14

YDI,
I haven't started any songs yet. Really just trying to get my technique down.
I have been practicing a G-B-D-E-F-E-D-B/C-E-G-A-A#-A-G-E Blues Riff and a Linkin Park styled D#-A#-B-A#-G#-F#-E-D# 1/2-1/8-1/8-1/8-1/8-1/2-1/2-1/1 (I started this one all on the 3rd String, but am working on 3rd and 4th now).
Since I am just beginning a new instrument, I wanted to build a firm foundation of basic techniques and then build on top of that with more advanced techniques, like Slap/Slide.
I have heard it is more challenging to sing and play bass. I can see why. I am focusing so much on proper finger positions and technique, I don't think I would remember the lyrics
Cheers,
Ken

Oh wow you just taught me some nice walking bass riffs. Thanks Grrrowler39! I've been playing E-G#-B-C#-E-C#-B-G# and A-C#-E-F#-A-F#-E-C# sounds similar but the intervals are different.
