Anybodys #1 a SX? Show Pics!
Man I tell ya I just love this guitar. Granted it's heavely modified but the body and neck are stock and it plays and feels great. The finish could'nt be any nicer and it was less than $100. I had an 1983 Electra Pheonix that I liked real well but the frets were gone and the body had a massive hunk missing at the jack. I was impressed with the versatility of that 83. It was set up as a single coil - humbucker - single coil made only that year and had volume and 2tones that were push/pull to split the center HB. You could get any sound you wanted from that thing. So I decided to rescue the old Pheonix and it rose from the ashes as this. I suck at taking pictures but I did manage to keep my thumb out of them.
***JUST PLAY***

I was looking at the Rondo site the other day and I noticed the current SX models have a funky headstock where the older ones have more of a stratish shape.

that's the main reason i haven't bought one. don't like the headstocks. the bodies look great and they seem like fantastic guitars for the price, but i'm a real classicist. i want my guitars to look like Leo Fender designed them.

Hi Peskypesky, I bought one about a year ago and SX SST57. The body is alder and very solid. I ended up replacing the pups with GFS alnico 5s and swapped the neck for a MM maple one with some nice new tuners. Not much of the SX left, but a great playing/sounding instrument.

The only thing left of the SX is the body/bridge. Neck, pups, pg, pots, switch etc. were all replaced. I guess I did keep the straplocks and the trem cover.

I gather that if you have the patience and tools that it is possible to mark a template of a Tele or Strat headstock and reshape the newer SX headstocks to at least a close approximation.
I'm not sure I'd go that far though.
Mainly because I'm sure I'd just end up doing a lot of swearing and staring at a pointy stick

I have a SX SST SE. It's not my #1, but it is a good sounding guitar. I think it's what is refered to as a hockey stick headstock

My question is where are they cutting the corners to get the prices so low? Pups and electronics? Body wood? What? Their prices make them tempting. I'm just afraid I'll get a POS. I could have several guitars similar to the "real" ones I want for the price of one of the name brand guitars.
Those do look nice, even if the new headstock shape is a bit odd after being used to the traditional Fender shapes.

I have had 2 SX guitars and had 2 SX basses. After mods and setup they OK at best. The hardware on the was cheap, pickups wereen't the bnest and the nut on them was bad. Even if I was to buy a project guitar I would go for used Squier. I have not been impressed with them at all. I know some ppl have got good ones but, I have never got one I was happy with. They are hit or miss like anything I suppose. Pawn shopping for a low end guitar is a bit better in my opinion cause you can at least get your hands on it before you buy.

ok, but if you spend $150 upgrading the pickups and hardware, the guitar would be good, no?

you are probably right. That would come to a total of 100 -150 (depending on model) for the guitar and 150 in hardware and electronics. The route I have gone on my last two guitar were A MIM strat for 200 and 50 for a bridge pickup, and 80 for a squier standard strat and 75 bucks in electronics and a set of tuners. The MIM was a superior build and a much better neck for the same price range. Same with the squier. I just came out a head going this route, I mean its just my advice. Like I said I know some people have got them and been happy. They just totally weren't good for me

thanks for you comments. since you've actually had these guitars, your opinion carries a lot of weight. i guess i'll pass on the SX guitars and stick with Squier and Fender.

thank you.
i just received a cream-colored Bullet a couple of days ago that i bought used off fleabay. unfortunately, a few frets are dented so severely that they need to be replaced. since i only paid $68 for the guitar, it doesn't seem to make sense to spend $200 for a refret. or even $70-80 for another Bullet neck.
i could send it back to the seller, as he seems willing to give me a refund. BUT, part of me is thinking of keeping it and getting a REALLY nice neck for it, like maybe a Warmoth compound radius neck. i have some GFS Premium Alnicos to put in it already.
i'm still trying to decide what to do...

Pls allow me to make a suggestion. I would look into a mighty might neck. I have bought a couple and they were totally great. Recently they have been making the mighty mites with the large headstock also. Look into them on ebay. For 95 bucks they are the shizzy

peskyesky,if there is enough of the frets left to level and recrown, you wont have to replace nothing.Buying the tools and learning to do it yourself can make future guitar set up and play better and save you money.

thanks for the tip. it's funny because i was lookinh at Mighty Mites on ebay today. they do look like good necks for the price, but if i bought one, i'd need to find a Squier waterslide decal, because i hate bare headstocks. they just look weird to me.

My Squier Affinity has "Made In Indonesia" printed on it so possibly labor cost is one reason the price is less than a Fender Stratocaster. I remember reading that the Affinity is made of Agathis wood. I don't believe Fender Stratocasters are made of Agathis. I prefer Agathis though, it is lightweight and I like the sound.

Hey peskypesky (it's bassbubble fom AGF). Anyway, yeah man I will
never buy an SX because of the hideous headstocks either. I was lucky
to nab a Jazz Bass from Rondo before all the old headstocks sold out.
It's not my #1 or 2 but it makes it into regular rotation.

You would get a lot different reviews of them by a lot of owners than Pesky has given over at the Agile forum.
http://www.agileguitarforum.com/sear...b4d6be2e522483
I have three SX guitars and like them all more than I like my heavily modded Squier strat. Actually, I have a Jay Turser strat that is my favorite strat. I would have an SX strat, but am not really a strat guy so much.
They have solid hardwood bodies and hardware the equal of all but the upper priced Squiers. The stock pickups don't sound bad at all. I had my tele for about three years before I changed anything but the nut, and then only changed pickups, pots and switch to Fenders, and then just by choice, not need. Less than $200 total invested for an alder body guitar with Fender parts and Fender Original Vintage pickups. My #1 guitar.
Here is a sample of a completely stock SX tele.
Here are a few of mine.

By the way, the most expensive of those guitars in the other post was the Thinline, at $149. The bass and the tele were $109, about four years ago. Still about that price. In fact, right now there are some of the same teles for $85.

I was an SX fan until they changed the head stocks. Sold my 2 jazz basses then started to miss them and wanted a cheap bass to mess around with and ended up with a Squier; ONLY BECAUSE OF THE HIDEOUS HEAD STOCK!!!!!

Every once in a while they will offer some with the old headstock. I got this one new a couple of months ago for $129....

It's funny in a way. Pesky has been gone for some time now.
As a follow up, he posted a thread today on the Agile forum entitled...dang, this SX Furrian sounds good!
not sure if this has been posted here before (i'm guessing it has)...but it sure shows off how good a stock Furrian can sound.
(he had a link to a You Tube demo)
