The Starcasters are widely considered trash, but at $20, the parts are worht that. I wish I'd have seen it, I'd have bought it for someone else.

I used a flea-bay starcaster body for the basis of a partscaster. Its laminated, but sounds good. Everything else on them is supposedly sub-par.

I saw a Starcaster a couple weeks ago, piece of crap with super high action, but jeez it had the flamey'ist maple neck I've ever seen........ever!
Was shocked to see it was a Starcaster. I got a pic of it in my phone, but I can't find the little metal sleeve to put my phones memory card in the computer to get the pics out.
Super flamey though. I know it sounds nuts but it really was.

I read that the necks are surprisingly good?
I dont know - I've never even seen a Starcaster in the flesh, let alone played one.
But if that is true, it maybe worth buying dirt cheap ones just for the neck?
And the any other salvageable bits that are not critical, but useful. I dunno what. Knobs or something

There seem to be more then one eddition. They sold one sold in Target/ Costco or BigBox stores for $100 bucks and one that seems to be like an affinity. I know my Wife bought one for our son. It looks like a twin to the affinity I have except it says Starcaster on it. It actually sounds better and out of the box had great low action and no buzz or hum.
I think the people who are trashing these must have the Target model. He has one of those at my Ex's house and says he wont play it because it hurts his fingers and sounds bad.

I picked up an arrohead HSS Starcaster for my daughter a few weeks ago, gave it a new set of strings, a thourough set up and am very impressed with the quality of sound and playability. The electronics are good, nice strat sound in the middle positions, the fretwork is clean and it plays well. What else is there??? A piece of crap? Thats what I used to say about Squiers when I was a guitar snob!!! It all comes down to the luck of the draw with asian guitars especially MIC axes, the quality controll is very inconsistant, however starcasters come with a two point tremelo, stripped neck and alder body, (more then the bullet can claim) that's nothin to turn your nose up at. Keep an open mind and play it. but when you look at an axe look at the possibilities too. People tell me that I am very good at setting up guitars, my experience is sometimes when people dog an axe it's because of a bad set up or a bad solder joint in the electronics. Sometimes all it takes is a good set up to get the mojo goin!!!!! $20 I'd buy it and make it play like 10 times that!

I do not buy guitars unseen because I absolutely require a straight neck.
If I was just starting out then any guitar with a fairly straight neck might be OK. I recall lots of people starting to learn guitar and giving up after a few weeks. I do not believe it makes sense to spend lots of money in the beginning.
I might use a cheap guitar for experimentation. For example, I might mount a pickup on a turntable so that I can hear how it sounds.
I don't take expensive instruments to the beach or to parties where someone might fall on them.
