Default Epi. vs Squi.

Are the Epiphones as much bang for the buck as Squires?
Especially the DOT Studio and Les Paul models.
Any input on your experience with these would be appreciated.

I'd think so... You do get some real nice Epis.

Frankly though, it's hard to resist getting a stellar example from both of them and to hell with Brand rivalry and Purist antics.

I had an Epi LP long time ago, way before I knew anything about anything with guitars. Looking back, a good setup would have made that a pretty awesome guitar. But I didn't know anything. I just thought it was hard to play and buzzed too much, and therefore was a piece of junk.

I have both, thay are a good value. I have mod. all my strats and a P/U change for the L.P. would help it but sounds good to me now. Don't get me wrong my son has a 60's RI Les Paul there is a BIG diff.in the two.But for my playing My Epi is just fine to me.

I had an Epi G-400 1966 Reissue SG for a while. Great guitar. I only sold it because I later got a Gibson SG Standard and it didn't make sense to keep both. I plan to get an Epi Casino in the near future.

I have a Squire BSB Tele and a 90s Squire Strat that I setup myself, so thats not a problem. I was just wondering if they are in the same class as Squire, as far as playing just as well as the high priced axes when u put the time in to get them playing right.

the Epiphone and Squier are two different styles/types of guitars. the Epiphones have "humbucking" pickups and the Squiers have "single coil" pickups. Epiphone guitars are good guitars and Squiers are good guitars. it's just a matter of personal taste. it'd be best to play a few of each before deciding which one that you like best. I like the difference in different guitars. so, I have a Gibson Les Paul and a MIM Squier Strat. I also have two Gretsch guitars. go have some fun and play a bunch of guitars.

where are you located in Mississippi ? I'm originally from Baton Rouge and all of my family is from Mississippi. welcome to squier-talk.

My 2 cents... i've never played an Epiphone that
felt remotely as good as even my Affinity Squiers.

Epiphone's almost always look killer, except for the
headstock (which i hate), but whenever i pick one up they feel like junk.

I've got a great Les Paul, so maybe i just know the
difference, but Epi's always feel like they're fighting
me when i play one.

Even a decent Affinity would get my money
before an Epiphone did... & they always do.

I'm from Wayne county, bout 45 miles south of Meridian. I used to have a Aria LP copy back in the day, and I been thinking about getting a Epiphone to get that thick Mahogany sound. I live way out in the woods and the closest thing to a music store is a Christian bookstore that sells strings and tuners, so going to play them isn't really an option. I'm thinking seriously about a Epiphone Les Paul Standard, read a bunch of good reviews, just wondered if any of u guys have played/owned one.

I had an Epi SG- 400, I sold it for the Squier Strat. The neck weighed more than the body, and always wanted to dive. The sound was good, but limited. 2 humbuckers don't give the range of sound 3 single coils do. I tried an Epi LP, but I like the Squiers more. They just felt better, which in the end is what's important - what feels right in the players hands. Plus Epi doesn't make lefty basses, so Squier wins again

I got a Epi LP Standard Plus HCS last November, and Gibson SG Special Faded WB in April. Same build & tone quality, except Epi LP has fatter tone, and SG brighter. Epi is certainly very nice to play, good balance on strap, as SG(!) too, in my case. Epi LP has naturally more beautiful finish, SG is meant to look like workhorse. It is nice to see at in it`s own way, though.
I have a Epiphone Hummingbird Standard too, no complaints. Maybe i am simply lucky.

epis are usually quite a bit more expensive than squiers. but IMHO it's like comparing apples to oranges. 2 totally different types of guitars. humbuckers v. single coils. mahogany v. alder. set neck (in most cases) v. bolt on (in most cases). all depends what you're looking for.

me? i like em both so i keep em both around. i've gotta standard les paul and love it. i've got what used to be an SE (lol) and love it. i'm making a partscaster and will love it!

variety is the spice of life eh?

so, Hattiesburg is the largest city close to you. hmmm are there any music stores in Hattiesburg ? are you thinking about ordering from Musician's Friend or Sweetwater ? there's a guy that I know up here that might get you a good deal. you can send me a PM and I'll give you the information. also, there is a sister forum to squier-talk. it's gibson-talk.com I'm a member there as well. there's a few guys on there that know about the Epi Les Paul Standard.

I've probably passed right by your house. I've been up I-59 a couple of times.

Do you play clean or with distortion? I had a Gibson Les Paul Standard and a Lyon Stratocaster copy with a humbucking pickup at the bridge. When I compared the two guitars in a A/B test, using overdrive distortion the two guitars sounded nearly the same. Playing clean the Les Paul sounded a little better, but an audience might not be able to tell the difference.

I only experienced two Epiphones, an ES335 copy and a ES150 copy, they were both very nice guitars.

One reason that I might buy Epiphone is for modification; I don't really want to modify a Gibson Les Paul.
