Lets talk (new) Starcasters
Hey all.
I've been seeing alot of new (Strat Style) Fender Starcasters around town lately and I have never heard anything about them. A quick wikipedia decribes them as low end but 'genuine' Strats with low quality parts. Made in China/Indonesia.
*But what about things like body size, is it full sized?
*Do they have full sized tone blocks, or could they hold one?
*Are the necks any good?
*Tuners any good?
*Worth modding?
*Etc. Etc..
Lets collect our knowledge here and see what these things are capable of!

I have one, and it's OK, but it's not half the guitar my Affinity Strat is.

Funny you should ask. The Starcasters are great guitars. My son started out on one and still plays it today along with his modded Bullet.
Here is one that I finished recently. GFS clearance vintage pick ups, 250k pots from Stew-Mac, push pull switch on rear tone for that super strat sound, tried to get it close to the Inca Silver, F neck plate, and yes a Fender decal on the headstock.
Chuckster did a real nice one on the ReRanch forum that got me wanting to do one.
I am even thinking of doing another Starcaster if I can find one with the maple neck.
Best,
BC

i love modding them. i just bought a starcaster neck off of discount guitar outlet on ebay. frets are great. usually people complain that they're too sharp, but these feel great. they're full sized, and they'll take a full size trem block. overall, i think they're highly underrated as far as being a base for modding. get 1 cheap and mod the living crap out of it!!

That is nice looking! Like the color especially. Hummm full sized blocks, good necks. Damn, now I gotta get one of those too for the collection.

be careful about the necks. they are hit or miss. sometimes the frets need leveled, sometimes they work well. i still HIGHLY recommend discount guitar outlet on ebay. this guy sells starcasters, and he preps them very nicely.

HUH!? Double Take
aaahhahhbuleeebaboobeeleeboobileeeblah
Starcasters good?
Say, bluecar, did you add a Bullet to the truss rod?
I had no idea they had full-size blocks... I knew the necks had the potential to be crap and thusly I stayed away as I thought they'd be like a bad Squier only costing more. It sounds like they're a lot better than Fender's very vague description makes them seem.
...some time later... just checked eBay and some places... they seem exactly the same as a Bullet in terms of quality. Frankly, I'm back to square one with no motivation to buy one. Folks'll sell a Bullet dirt cheap but not a Starcaster... and I prefer the C-shaped Bullet neck to the Starcasters D-shape.
So... I see NO advantage. I'd just buy a Squier and mod it. Squiers are easier to get REALLY cheap.
BUT I'm in the UK, things are different here, no one here wants to sell stuff dirt cheap unless they ignorantly think it's really crap or they really wish to be rid of it. That or they're a nice person. Mostly though, folks will try and sell stuff like Encore for £100+. that should give you an idea of how many Brits aspire to being Guitar Con artists...
Starcasters are crap HERE as the price is never worth it.

Bill Stickers,
Good eyes. Yes, I added a Bullet to the truss rod. Ready for the secret install,
it's epoxied on the end of the real truss rod. Please, stop laughing, seriously.
It really was a fun project, and does play as good as my 1994 MIM. But I also set it up the way that I like to play.
It's all about having fun building guitars that you can't afford if it
was a real Strat.
Best,
BC

Agreed. I have fun... I just have a more stringent budget
I love the Bullet Truss Rod End, they're excellent and very very cool looking!
Does it still function You say epoxied and my brain says NO, but the benefit of the doubt would be knowing it's possible... cuz I'd love to have a Bullet in my Neck(s)
A damn cool project, you applied that decal and aged the headstock quite expertly

it all comes down to availability IMHO. if you come across a steal of a guitar, be it squier, starcaster, cort, galveston, whatever. nab it and mod it! if the neck is junk, either fix it or replace it. u do whatcha gotta do to get 'er done...really didn't mean to quote larry the cable guy there, but u know what i mean.

Hey,
We took a few minutes yesterday and had my 16 year old son give a quick demo on our Starcaster project.
Get one, mod it and paint it, all for under $150.00 then play the heck out of it and have a blast !!
Best,
BC
