whats your sound set up? More volume in does not mean more volume out,can cause lots distortion. only way to get more volume out is powered speaker system like a 100 watt speaker system

hmmm k.... I am assuming things here so forgive me.. your on a desk top, you have the git running into the sound card via the LINE IN not the mic plug, you have right clicked on the speaker on the task bar and opened the volume control, made sure all the volumes are on high and nothing is muted....?

also in your volume control click options, properties and make sure the line in or aux (what ever you using to plug the git into)is checked for use in playback.

sorry mic is mono....line in is stereo but may still be the cause, as i said try moving the balance slider in main volume properties and see if it increasing the volume you get out any. Puters like to split the mono into two channels.

not sure about the effects pedal, as of this time i have never tried to put my git into the puter. I still suspect the adapter as your culprit as it is a stereo adapter you using on mono config, guitar is mono and the mic port is mono... but just a guess.. i am running out of ideas

e: The number of jack connectors you'll find on your soundcard will depend on how many audio channels it has:
* Stereo cards with just two audio channels will have only the green (output), blue (input) and pink (microphone) jacks.
* A few sound cards with 8 (7.1) audio channels do not provide the gray (Middle Surround Speakers) connector. If your computer is equipped with this type of card and you want to use all the 8 channels you will need to connect your motherboard to a 7.1 home theater system using the SPDIF digital connector.
* Some motherboards with 4 or 6 channels don't have the black (Rear Surround) and orange (Subwoofer and Center) jacks. These cards will use the blue jack for both line in and rear surround speakers out, and the pink jack for both mic input and subwoofer/center out. Therefore, whenever you want to use any of these jacks for a different function, you will have to manually remove one jack connector and plug in another.

did you plug your speaker system right into your guitar and bypass the puter? After all it is a powered speaker system right, guitar to pedal in, pedal out to powered speaker system and use guitar volume control?

There might be an impedance mismatch. The microphone input might be designed for a microphone of about 600 ohms, a guitar pickup impedance might be 7000 ohms. The difference means a microphone delivers about 10 times more electricity to the computer than a guitar pickup. That's about what you are hearing, a 10 fold difference in sound level.
I do not know anyone that plugs guitar into computer directly. I remember reading about guitars plugged into mixers then mixer line output to computer, and about guitar usb cables - they plug into the usb port.
