Actually it is 'way better than fun.
It sets the mood and the foundation of the music. The kick drum and the bass are the driving force in music (well, music that uses them, that is) and it gets the audience moving - something a guitar or horns cannot do. It's almost primitive in the way it controls the mood.
Let the bass just stop in a song and it all falls apart.
Besides - when you play a bass you are really in control of the band. You drive so much power and authority that the band slows down or speed up to your output.
One interesting aspect of playing a bass - it is so intensive that you usually cannot sing along with the group. I find that when I sing, I start running with the bassline and then I am countering the melody and singing the bass harmony. That won't usually work.
My hat's off to those who can do it - Smits is a very good example.
